talking into the void
the effect that facebook has had on my lj posting is interesting...
recently, i've largely only been posting to lj as a means of communication - in other words, i don't write these entries for my own amusement.
given that i have an audience on fb, and an audience here, and they're both different, and also smaller than my lj audience of a year ago (at least, so it seems), i've really not been posting anything on either place.
interesting.
or maybe i just have less to say? :)

wikipedia adventures .. and BARBIE
some time ago, it was shown to me that the barbie article on wikipedia said she went to stuyvesant high school. (or that the school that she went to was modelled after it).
this struck me as kind of strange, since at the time barbie was created, stuy was an all-boys school.. so i stuck in the obligatory {{fact}}, and eventually, someone else removed it.
but, i was curious - who would put that in? would it be someone famous? jake dobkin?
so i started on a binary search, and figured out who did it. and, lo and behold, it's someone who reads this journal!
i'd kept meaning to ask in person, but instead i'll do it here. why? :) was there an actual reason?

I was encouraged by a lot of the changes that were happening in the 1960s, but as an orthodox leftist I was also a very strong critic of the student movement and the New Left. Of course, I agreed with a lot of their stances—I was strongly pro—civil rights and strongly antiwar—but most of those people were not really radicals, just a bunch of very pissed-off liberals. They had no grounding, and indeed no interest, in theory, and their disdain for studying history and learning economics infuriated me. The core problem with the New Left was that it wasn't an ideology, it was a mood—and if you are susceptible to one mood, you are susceptible to another. They wanted the world to change, but essentially it was a petty bourgeois movement that had no connection with what was really going on. The working class at least has some power—if the working class folds its arms, the machinery stops—and as for the ruling class, its power is obvious. But what power does the middle class have? They have the power to talk: yak, yak, yak. To interpret, reinterpret, and re-re-reinterpret. And that is the history of the New Left in a nutshell.

Due to the nature of our campaign we need to make sure every vote counts and do everything possible to make sure that the votes cannot be refuted in any way. Unfortunately, if a vote is made and payment is not collected it becomes difficult to authenticate the vote.

And in a survey of approximately 2,700 "high-achieving" men -- those in the top 10 percent of their age income bracket and/or with an advanced degree -- a University of Iowa researcher found they are likely to marry women with education levels and careers that mirror those of their moms.
